Fighting Wage Theft
Wage theft is rampant in industries with low-wage immigrant workers. Although The Fair Labor Division of the Office of the Attorney General in Massachusetts processes thousands of wage theft cases annually, the A.G. herself confirms that the office is overwhelmed and relies on worker centers like MWC-Casa to help prioritize cases and provide support. Wage theft is exacerbated by companies who utilize law-breaking sub-contractors in low-wage industries like landscaping, construction, cleaning, and restaurants. These employers avoid legal responsibility for wage theft by hiding behind the subcontractors who have the formal legal responsibility but against whom workers are unable to collect.
MWC-Casa utilizes a unique combination of legal strategies, communication with the Attorney General's office, and direct action organizing to recover stolen wages. Since our founding we have recovered over $4 million dollars on behalf of workers.
