Supporting Community Health Needs
Health care is a human right, but is often occluded for members of the immigrant community. Whether it be receiving baseline access to primary care physicians, being prepared for acute emergencies, or responding to on-the-job injury, by expanding support for the community to access health insurance and providers, we strive to contribute to the all-around well being of community members.
Immigrants are uninsured at rates far higher than the general population. Contributing factors include language and literacy challenges, unfamiliarity with application processes, and fears or misconceptions regarding complex guidelines for accessing health insurance and health care. Health insurance coverage advances health equity by ensuring individuals have access to healthcare services, addressing the systemic issues contributing to health disparities. On staff, our community health worker helps to manage support for applying and renewing coverage to the state's medicaid -- MassHealth. Additional work includes outreach around insurance to various sectors of the local immigrant community as well as coordination with other Casa staff, worker membership, and community partners to increase access to local medical providers -- be they PCPs or specialists.
